As a child, I was taught that there were two kinds of people in the world: rich people and poor people. The first full of luxury and opulence, while the latter surrounded by hunger and misery. However, as I grew up I couldn’t understand why those who had everything often complained about life, while those who had nothing were happy with the whatever life provided them the day to day. Over time I understood that there not only the material poverty existed, but also the spiritual: the poverty of the soul. It was then that I realized that the material things were not the most important. I realized there were many people in hunger worldwide, hungry for God, perhaps seeking a bit of peace.
Wealth does not depend on how much money you accumulate. Poverty is not the lack of money; true poverty is the lack of understanding. Once, a man made the following question to a great woman: "Do you think that the poor will disappear one day in our society, frustrated by opposite ends of a shameful wealth and an impressive poverty?". Her response was: "As long as rich exist, so will the poor." It is necessary that we understand the poorer because there is not only the material poverty, but also the spiritual, which is deeper and more difficult to handle, poverty is nested in the heart of the very rich people. Wealth is not just money or property, but also our attachment to things and the abuse of them. When these things become our idols, we then turn very poor. "As long as there are rich people that abuse or not using things to God´s will, there will always be poor people worldwide". (MOTHER TERESA OF CALCULTTA).
It doesn’t matter what we do or where we are, as long as we realize that we belong to life, and that she can make anything of us and we owe her love and respect. In the end, Nobody owns anything: beauty is eventually gone, the money comes and goes, and all that really belongs to humans is what they give to others.
Maybe this Christmas we can find its true meaning.
