Foreign investment in Costa Rica reached a historic figure: 2,021 million dollars in 2008, which represents an increase of 7% versus 2007 in which the country accumulated 1,896 million. During 2008, the Foreign Direct Investment placed Costa Rica as the second-best place to invest in Latin America just behind Puerto Rico.
Costa Rica is undergoing a series of changes that are seeking to become Latin America´s hot spot for foreign investment; the construction of a new highway going from San José to Caldera Port (the most important port in Costa Rica´s Pacific shoreline), a Mega Port construction in the Caribbean, a brand new electric railway that will communicate three provinces, and modifications to the Free Trade Zones laws to retain and attract even more companies, seem to be the strategies that the Costa Rican government is betting to keep on growing as an investment destination to those companies seeking for highly qualified professionals in a near-shore location from the US.
Companies such as HP employ almost 7,000 people, and have recently opened its first wireless technology research laboratory run a 100% by Costa Rican talent, Procter & Gamble has recently turned ten years of having initiated operations in Costa Rica, from where they handle their financial operations and internal controls worldwide. The above, are only a couple of examples of the caliber of companies that trust Costa Rica and its professionals every day. Did I mention that there is a laboratory with a 100% Costa Rican scientists that is building a plasma motor for NASA´s next trip to Mars? Well, We think that says it all. We will be more than delighted of offering advice on how to invest in Costa Rica and the particularities of doing business on our country.
